Why you can't download a porn app from the App Store

Because Apple and Google won't allow it. Both stores ban porn outright, and they have for years. Every porn "app" you've heard of is really a website you add to your home screen. That turns out to work just as well.

Apple's rule

Apple's App Review Guidelines ban "overtly sexual or pornographic material" under rule 1.1.4, and Apple enforces it hard. In 2010, in an email published by TechCrunch, Steve Jobs put it bluntly: people who want porn can buy an Android phone.

Google's rule (so much for Android)

Google Play bans it too. Its developer policy doesn't allow apps that contain or promote sexual content, pornography included. Android does let you install apps from outside the Play Store, but you have to switch off a security setting and trust a file from somewhere on the internet. For most people that's not worth the risk.

The one exception: Europe

In 2024 the EU's Digital Markets Act forced Apple to allow alternative app stores in the EU. In February 2025 a porn app called Hot Tub became the first to ship on iPhone that way, through a marketplace called AltStore PAL. Apple publicly objected. It only works for EU accounts, and you have to install a separate app store first. For everyone else, nothing has changed.

It's not just the app stores

Two other things keep porn out of mainstream apps.

Payments. Visa and Mastercard have strict rules for adult businesses, so adult sites rely on specialist payment processors. App store billing isn't an option even if the stores allowed it.

Age checks. A growing list of US states, plus the UK and others, now require adult sites to verify that you're 18 or over. Sites handle that in the browser, at signup.

So what's a porn app now

A web app. You open a site in Safari or Chrome, tap Add to Home Screen, and you get an icon that opens full screen with no browser bars. It updates itself, it never touches the App Store, and it leaves no store purchase record. Deleting it takes two seconds.
